Ait Ben Haddou — the UNESCO ksar

The most famous ksar in southern Morocco, at the gates of the desert

Why visit Ait Ben Haddou?

Ait Ben Haddou, an exceptional destination

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, the ksar of Ait Ben Haddou is the most impressive fortified earthen settlement in Morocco. Founded in the 11th century on the caravan route linking Sudan to Marrakech, its earthen houses with crenellated corner towers line the slope of a hill overlooking the Ounila Valley. Its spectacular silhouette has served as the backdrop for numerous international films and series — Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Game of Thrones — making it one of the most photographed sites in North Africa. Located about 30 km from Ouarzazate and its film studios, it is an essential stop on the road linking Marrakech to the Merzouga desert, via the Tichka Pass and its High Atlas panoramas.
