Azure blue alleyways and the Rif mountains — Morocco's most photogenic city
Why visit Chefchaouen?
Perched at 600 metres altitude in the Rif mountains, Chefchaouen owes its worldwide fame to walls painted in every shade of blue, a tradition dating back to Jewish refugees in the 1930s. Founded in 1471 as a stronghold against Portuguese incursions, the town was long forbidden to foreigners — which explains its preserved atmosphere, unique in Morocco. Quieter than the great imperial medinas, it is best explored on foot among flower-lined alleyways, Berber weaving workshops and small shaded squares where you can sip mint tea facing the mountains. It's an essential stop on northern tours, usually combined with Fes, Meknes, Tangier or Rabat, and one of the favourite destinations of photographers worldwide.

A palette of blues on the medina's walls and doors, particularly luminous in late morning.
The lively heart of the medina, lined with cafés and dominated by the 15th-century kasbah and its great octagonal mosque.
Wool weavings, babouches and local goat cheeses, sold in small family-run shops.
Talassemtane National Park, at the town's edge, offers trails and waterfalls for nature lovers.
