Essaouira — the city of trade winds

Ramparts facing the Atlantic and a UNESCO-listed bohemian medina

Why visit Essaouira?

Essaouira, an exceptional destination

Former Mogador, Essaouira is a fortified port city of immediate charm: 18th-century ramparts battered by waves, a whitewashed UNESCO-listed medina, a colourful fishing port and a beach stretching as far as the eye can see. Designed by French engineer Théodore Cornut on the orders of Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah, the town was long Morocco's leading trading port and a crossroads of Arab, Berber, Jewish and European cultures — a legacy visible in its architecture and thuya wood marquetry craftsmanship. Renowned as the world capital of windsurfing and kitesurfing thanks to its constant trade winds, and favoured by artists since the visits of Orson Welles and Jimi Hendrix, it is easily visited on a day trip from Marrakech, through the UNESCO argan biosphere reserve.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions about Essaouira
